I used to have a mid-size aquarium that I inherited from the previous house owners so it was already well established.

When we moved I had to leave the tank behind, now I'm looking to set up a new tank, and would like suggestions for hardy freshwater tropical fish to help mature the system. I'm looking for ones that will weather the nitrogen spike and survive until the system stablises.

Some pointers to help mature the aquarium and minimise the shock to the fish would also be appreciated.

Were you interested in freshwater or saltwater fish? – Paul Jan 26 at 15:50

I would suggest starting with Zebra fish, as they are reputed to be pretty hardy in new aquariums.

You may also want to consider adding a bottom feeder, such as a catfish to provide clean-up duty.
