What kind of foods should I make sure my dog doesn't eat? I know that you can't feed them chocolate, but what else is unsafe?

Avocado: The leaves, fruit, seeds and bark of avocados contain Persin, which can cause vomiting and diarrhea in dogs.

Onions, Garlic, Chives: These vegetables and herbs can cause gastrointestinal irritation and could lead to red blood cell damage. Although cats are more susceptible, dogs are also at risk if a large enough amount is consumed.

A huge one is Xylitol (used in all sugar-free gum). If your dog gets ahold of a package of gum this stuff can take them down very, very quickly.

Xylitol can also be found in sugar-free candies, baked goods, some pharmaceuticals and many dental products, including mouthwashes, mints and toothpastes.

Here is some more reading on this http://30minvetconsult.com/blog/2009/04/09/xylitol-toxicosis/ but the general consensus is that 1-2 pieces of gum can take down a 20lb dog.

I don't know about the avocado. Do you have any cite(s) for this? There is a brand of expensive dog food that includes avocado and our vet said feeding our dogs a little fresh avocado is good for them.
